Summary

A boy like no other embarks on a transformative journey of magic and self-discovery in the next enchanting Whimbrel House novel by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N。 Holmberg。 Merritt Fernsby’s life has changed considerably since he inherited Whimbrel House。 He’s engaged to Hulda Larkin, who opened his eyes to the uncanny。 And he’s grown quite protective of his uncle Owein―several generations, and iterations, removed。 Owein is presently inhabiting the body of a mixed-breed terrier when Merritt receives a missive from none other than Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of I am interested in your dog。 It’s the queen’s duty to the peerage to keep British wizardry empowered。 Her England will find a human vessel for Owein, marry him into the royal family, and add this remarkable soul-shifter to its lineage。 For Owein, a boy trapped in the body of a pup, it’s a dream come true。 How can Merritt refuse? However, once they are in London and in consortium with a necromancer, the situation doesn’t feel right, both with their hosts and the house they inhabit。 Owein is having nightmares。 And Hulda’s premonitions warn of danger in Merritt’s future。 Clearly, someone doesn’t want them in town。 But after two hundred years of being cursed to drift, Owein is determined to chart his own destiny。 He’s ready to defy whatever chaos is coming。 After all, Owein is the master of chaos, and with Merritt and Hulda’s love and magical support, he can overcome anything。

The Whimbrel House series continues with the third installment。 This story has Merritt, Hulda, and Owein hopping across the pond to England at the behest of Her Majesty the Queen。 With Owein’s soul trapped in the body of a dog, the offer he receives is too good to resist – if Owein enters into a marriage agreement with a young member of the royal family, the family will find a human body to transfer his soul into。 The advantage for the royal family is the chance to add strong magical talent to t The Whimbrel House series continues with the third installment。 This story has Merritt, Hulda, and Owein hopping across the pond to England at the behest of Her Majesty the Queen。 With Owein’s soul trapped in the body of a dog, the offer he receives is too good to resist – if Owein enters into a marriage agreement with a young member of the royal family, the family will find a human body to transfer his soul into。 The advantage for the royal family is the chance to add strong magical talent to the family line。 What’s in it for Owein? A chance to be human again。But not everyone is happy about this arrangement。 Hulda and Merritt question the ethics of how a body will be found, the sister of the young woman who will one day marry Owein is vocal about her objections, and a group of Druids is hoping Owein will join their group。 Is someone mad enough to hurt the group from America? As a series of magical mishaps occurs at the estate Owein is staying at, it’s clear that not everyone is okay with this arrangement。Another great book from Ms。 Holmberg! I love this series – it’s full of magic, romance, and mystery。 I really enjoy the way these characters have grown and evolved。 The writing is thoughtful, fun, and clever。 A great series for anyone who likes a mix of history, fantasy, and a group of misfits who find family in each other。 I rate it 4 stars。 。。。more

Delightful charming series。 Fairly gentle but not a true cozy as bad things happen。 Not a book three you should start with but definitely a series worth reading。 It’s really grown on me。

I was so happy and excited to continue the story of Merritt, Hulda, and Owein again! This third book in the Whimbrel House series made me fall in love even more with this continuing story and characters。An engaged Merritt and Hulda are in the midst of planning their wedding when a familiar yet mysterious messenger shows up to Whimbrel House with a letter from a very prestigious monarch。 The letter pertains to only one thing: Queen Victoria is interested in Owein, a human soul trapped in the body I was so happy and excited to continue the story of Merritt, Hulda, and Owein again! The setting of London and the intricacies of magic being a prominent part of everyday life in England was such a fascinating development in this story。 Owein has always had a huge place in my heart, but his kind, caring, and observant nature made me love him even more。 I see so many qualities in Hilda that I relate to and her blossoming relationship with Merritt was so heartwarming to watch and I am so happy we get to celebrate their wedding in this story! I am now anxiously awaiting book 4 of this series and cannot wait to have another adventure in this story!I received a complimentary copy of this story but am leaving my thoughts and review happily and voluntarily。 。。。more

The perfect sequel! I loved that this one didn't rehash too much from previous books, but built off of them and went forward。The continuing development for established characters was well done。 Hulda especially has become one of my favorites while watching her confidence grow even more and slowly but steadily open up to Merrit。 I adored their relationship。 I'm also always rooting for my favorite little kid/200+ year old/dog Owein and was happy (also sad) to find out more of his backstory。This bo The perfect sequel! Boy of Chaotic Making! The third in the series! I would have loved to learn more about the druids as well as about the queen and her abilities。 These plot lines were only dealt with on a superficial level。 However, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and read it in only a few days since I was already so familiar with the Whimbrel characters。P。S。: Fortunately, the novel was provided by NetGalley。 My review is not biased on receiving the book for free though。 。。。more

As I just said, he has always been the heart of the story, but this time his arc truly becomes the center of the book。 He has a dark past and finally finds some relief, though the path to it is difficult。 I rooted so hard for him during the book and can't wait to learn more about his future in book 4。- Hulda and Merritt's relationship。 It is still sweet, lighthearted, and a pleasure to read about。 I particularly enjoyed seeing Hulda take a rather sudden decision, which is untypical of her, but also proof of her character growth。 I particularly enjoyed seeing her dilemma between her career and her upcoming marriage and even potential motherhood, and loved seeing how she realizes she doesn't have to "choose" and it's all about balance。- Though I missed Whimbrel House, the British setting was a pleasant change, as well as the new characters introduced for this new part of the story。- We finally learn more about Baptiste's backstory and why he ended up in prison before meeting Merritt。 I won't spoil anything, but as a French person myself who absolutely LOVE the cause of Baptiste's downfall, it made me laugh so hard。 It was perfect。 What I found less satisfying:- I enjoyed reading the book, but plot-wise, nothing much happens。 It feels like a "transition" book to the fourth and last book in the series。 Not a terrible thing since I never got bored, but I wished a bit more would have happened。- The Druids。 Interesting concept, but lacked development and connection to the overall plot。 Maybe we will see more of them in the next book。Overall, a good book in a great series。 If you like historical fantasy and romance that doesn't overshadow the rest of the plot, you should definitely consider reading this series。 。。。more

Boy of Chaotic MakingBy Charlie N。 HolmbergSo happy to once again dive into this world and spend some time with these characters。 I wanted something a little cozy to read over Christmas, and this was perfect 😊Our found family has made their way to England this time and are confronted with something that may be too good to be true。 But someone is trying to ruin the whole endeavor。 Part cozy, part mystery, and part delving into the magic system: I continue to be enthralled by this series。 My only Boy of Chaotic MakingBy Charlie N。 HolmbergSo happy to once again dive into this world and spend some time with these characters。 I wanted something a little cozy to read over Christmas, and this was perfect 😊Our found family has made their way to England this time and are confronted with something that may be too good to be true。 But someone is trying to ruin the whole endeavor。 Part cozy, part mystery, and part delving into the magic system: I continue to be enthralled by this series。 My only complaint is that some of the delays involved seemed a tad forced。 Thanks so much to @netgalley and @cnholmberg for the ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Sequels are hard。 It’s not the easiest thing to keep attention over the span of multiple books, and few authors manage to do it without massive cliffhangers。 Thankfully, this is one of them。I picked up the first in the series on Amazon first reads。 I didn’t read it for nearly a year, but once I picked it up I discovered it was a nice change of pace from my normal romantasy books。 The mystery and… well honestly, spookiness of the first book had me hook, line, and sinker。 I loved watching the roma Sequels are hard。 It’s not the easiest thing to keep attention over the span of multiple books, and few authors manage to do it without massive cliffhangers。 Thankfully, this is one of them。I picked up the first in the series on Amazon first reads。 I didn’t read it for nearly a year, but once I picked it up I discovered it was a nice change of pace from my normal romantasy books。 The mystery and… well honestly, spookiness of the first book had me hook, line, and sinker。 I loved watching the romance bud between Merritt and Hulda as well; it’s such an innocent development and just so sweet to read。 The second book continues the plot and leads you more into the twists and turns of the long term plot and successfully keeps my attention again。 Lots of drama and rescue and fear in the second book, and of course we see how Owein becomes trapped in a dog’s body。 The third book starts a bit slow。 I’m reading this around the holidays so not a lot of downtime and lots of interruptions。 I still managed to read this fairly quickly, and honestly I enjoyed it, but not as much as the previous two。 I pegged whodunnit fairly early, so the shocker wasn’t very shocking。 I did thoroughly enjoy getting to know Owein better; his narrations are some of my favorite。 It’s adorable to watch him grown and learn and make friends。 Hulda and Merritt also make for a heartwarming plot line, and I love how they elope for themselves back in a time where that was just unheard of。 Some of my favorite bits of book are the parts showing how real their relationship is; the jealousy she feels over visions without knowing the backstory is truthfully so relatable。 And Merritt’s reaction is just perfect。 Honestly, Merritt is husband goals。 The second half of this book went a lot quicker than the first, but I enjoyed the entirety of it。 I’m still struggling to figure out the dog at the very end, I want to know who that is pretty desperately。 All in all, four stars because it didn’t quite compete with the first two。 Truthfully my only complaint is that whodunnit is kind of obvious (at least it was to me), and the level of mystery and drama is nowhere near what it is in the previous books。 At no point did I fear for anyone’s life (except at the end for obvious reasons), but that kind of makes the book a little less thrilling and interesting to me。 The first two books were definitely and fantasy love story, but there’s a level of thriller and mystery and procedural that just doesn’t quite follow through in this one。 I love a good happy ending, but the pathway to it needed a bit more treachery。 All in all, well worth my time。 I read this as an advanced reader copy and am grateful I was given that opportunity。 。。。more

A cozy read with mystery, magic and a little mayhem! I enjoyed this book very much。 It was a perfect book to curl up to。 As this book is part of a series I highly recommend you read the first two books。 I can honestly say that if you like the Kitchen Witch then this series is for you。

There are a bunch of things this book does really, really well。 The characters are delightful and continue to grow and change as the series develops。 My biggest qualm with the second book was how much of it was dedicated to them moving from place to place to fulfill their series of tasks, so it was nice to return to the format of "something weird is happening in this giant house," even though, in this case, it's in a British estate。 I didn't necessarily mind the lack of deadly stakes in this one There are a bunch of things this book does really, really well。 The characters are delightful and continue to grow and change as the series develops。 My biggest qualm with the second book was how much of it was dedicated to them moving from place to place to fulfill their series of tasks, so it was nice to return to the format of "something weird is happening in this giant house," even though, in this case, it's in a British estate。 I didn't necessarily mind the lack of deadly stakes in this one, especially since the epilogue makes it seem like the next one will be heavy on the magic cadavers。 My biggest complaint with the book was the balance between the whimsical and the silly/outlandish/ridiculous elements。 The magic system and the antics have always tended towards whimsy, even at its most sinister moments。 I think the silly premise of this one - heiress does not want to marry ghost-turned-house-turned-dog - made it hard to switch gears into its serious discussions about grief and mortality。Thank you NetGalley and 47North for giving me an ARC in exchange for my honest review! 。。。more
